FaceBook-Logo1

This iconic documentary depicts the fashion subculture Ball Culture by following an infamous ensemble of African-American and Hispanic gay and transgender New Yorkers who live out their High Fashion dreams by mimicking catwalk supermodels. In doing so they wear their own magnificent creations and invent their own unique dance style called ‘voguing’ – so famously adopted by Madonna. However joyful Paris Is Burning also writes a complex essay on class, race, identity, and the transformative powers of dance and performance. The film won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize in 1991 but the topics of class, race, identity and the continued marginalization of queer people of colour is still highly relevant today.

The screening will be followed by a panel debate moderated by acclaimed fashion researcher ELSE SKJOLD and consists of politician and designer RASMUS NORDQVIST, artistic director from Warehouse 9 MISS FISH aka JØRGEN CALLESEN and artist and dj KENNETH COCKWHORE.

The evening is presented in collaboration with MIX Copenhagen | LesbianGayBiTrans Film Festival.
